He had been awarded the RK only days before. 3 August 1943 – Oberleutnant Risch (Panzer Regiment GD) fell in the battle for 'Cornfield Hill'. 6 Aug – 14 Sep 43 – Defensive fighting in the area west of Charkow. 9 August 1943 – Leutnant Wolf Detlev Graf von Schwerin (Panzer Grenadier Regiment GD) falls in the attack on Kirikovka. 11 August 1943 – Gefreiter Kilger (Assault Gun Battalion GD), the radio operator in his gun, fell when his assault gun was hit in the flank. 11 August 1943 – Leutnant Ahlfeldt (commander 7 Kompanie/ II Battalion) and Unteroffizier Rose (7 Kompanie) fell in the fighting near Akhtyrka. 15 August 1943 – Gefreiter Johann Harböck fell in the defensive battles at Achyrka 19 August 1943 – Gefreiter (Signals) Alfred Krämer fell at the hands of Bolshevik bandits while retuirning from furlough at Lublin, Poland 21 August 1943 – Gefreiter Dresche (II Battalion/ Panzer Grenadier Regiment GD) was stabbed to death while lying wounded in his fox hole. 21 August 1943 – Pioneer Josef Stadler fell in action. 22 August 1943 – Gefreiter Hans Kistler fell in action in the East. 6 September 1943 – Leutnant Grimm (commander 1 Battery/ Assault Gun Battalion GD) fell in close combat with enemy infantry at Sinkiv. 6 September 1943 – Oberleutnant Wehmeyer (commander 3 Battery) along with two of his crew, Unteroffizier Kallert and Obergefreiter Schreiber, fell in Oposhnya. 12 September 1943 – Unteroffizier Hauth, Unteroffizier Donauberger, Gefreiter Gräfe, Stabsgefreiter Goldewey, Gefreiter Graf, and Gefreiter Schulz fell in the fighting west of Makuchi at hill 172.6 while Rühr, Rumey and Wurm (all from 13 Kompanie/ Panzer Grenadier Regiment GD) all died of their wounds. 15 Sep – 27 Sep 43 – Defensive battles in southern Russia and retreat fighting to the Dniepr. 28 Sep – 31 Dec 43 – Defensive fighting on the Dniepr. 1 October 1943 – Wachtmeister Wilhelm Bindseil and Unteroffizier Josef Maier (Assault Gun Battalion GD) fell during the assault on hill 172.2. 3 October 1943 – Oberleutnant Hans-Wilhelm Verch (commander 2 Battery/ Armored Reconnaissance Battalion GD) and Gefreiter Karl Kaufmann fell in a mortar barrage. 8 October 1943 – Oberleutnant Arnold (10 Kompanie), Leutnant Folke (9 Kompanie), Oberfeldwebel Friedebach (HQ Kompanie), Obergefreiter Jensen (HQ Kompanie), Obergefreiter Fritz (HQ Kompanie) (all from the Armored Reconnaissance Battalion GD) were captured by the Russians. Only Leutnant Folke returned in 1953 after 10 years as a POW.
